On the Structure of Isometries between Noncommutative L Spaces

چکیده

We prove some structure results for isometries between noncommutative L spaces associated to von Neumann algebras. We find that an isometry T : L(M1) → L(M2) (1 ≤ p < ∞, p 6= 2) can be canonically expressed in a certain simple form whenever M1 has variants of Watanabe’s extension property [W2]. Conversely, this form always defines an isometry provided that M1 is “approximately semifinite” (defined below). Although neither of these properties is fully understood, we show that they are enjoyed by all semifinite algebras and hyperfinite algebras (with no summand of type I2), plus others. Thus the classification is stronger than Yeadon’s theorem [Y1] for semifinite algebras (and its recent improvement in [JRS]), and the proof uses independent techniques. Related to this, we examine the modular theory for positive projections from a von Neumann algebra onto a Jordan image of another von Neumann algebra, and use such projections to construct new L isometries by interpolation. Some complementary results and questions are also presented.

Structure Encodes Exactly Jordan Structure

We prove that for all 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞, p 6= 2, the L spaces associated to two von Neumann algebras M, N are isometrically isomorphic if and only if M and N are Jordan *-isomorphic. This follows from a noncommutative L Banach-Stone theorem: a specific decomposition for surjective isometries of noncommutative L spaces.

A New Proof of the Noncommutative Banach-stone Theorem

Surjective isometries between unital C*-algebras were classified in 1951 by Kadison [K]. In 1972 Paterson and Sinclair [PS] handled the nonunital case by assuming Kadison’s theorem and supplying some supplementary lemmas. Here we combine an observation of Paterson and Sinclair with variations on the methods of Yeadon [Y] and the author [S1], producing a fundamentally new proof of the structure ...

Complete Isometries - an Illustration of Noncommutative Functional Analysis

This article, addressed to a general audience of functional analysts, is intended to be an illustration of a few basic principles from ‘noncommutative functional analysis’, more specifically the new field of operator spaces. In our illustration we show how the classical characterization of (possibly non-surjective) isometries between function algebras generalizes to operator algebras. We give s...

We first study positivity in C*-modules using tripotents (= partial isometries) which are what we call open. This is then used to study ordered operator spaces via an ‘ordered noncommutative Shilov boundary’ which we introduce. This boundary satisfies the usual universal diagram/property of the noncommutative Shilov boundary, but with all the ‘arrows’ completely positive. Because of their indep...
